Chromatic violin tuner listening through your microphone. Standard GDAE tuning in perfect fifths. Adjustable reference A from 415 Hz (baroque) to 446 Hz.
Violins tune in perfect fifths. Start with the A string (the reference) and work outward.
The lowest string. A perfect fifth below D.
A perfect fifth below the reference A.
The reference string. Start here β tune to 440 Hz (or your orchestra pitch) first.
The highest string. A perfect fifth above A.
Baroque and early music ensembles tune to A=415 Hz. Some modern European orchestras tune to A=442 or 443 Hz for a brighter sound. Check with your ensemble before tuning.
Use fine tuners for small adjustments (within 20 cents). Use pegs for larger adjustments. Turn pegs slowly and support the instrument β a slipping peg can snap a string. Bow the string while tuning so you hear the pitch stabilise.
The chromatic detection works for any string instrument. For viola (CGDA) or cello (CGDA), follow the cents reading β the string pills will highlight the nearest violin string, but that does not affect the detection accuracy.
Train your ear to hear when the fifths ring true.
